From Manual Chaos to 99.99% Uptime: Building a Serverless Platform for Nanyang Technological University

About the client

The Client:
Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Nanyang Technological University is a world-renowned university in Singapore, recognized globally for its leadership in research and innovation. The university's Department of Heath initiative, a core component of its commitment to staff well-being, aims to deliver a seamless and efficient health screening experience at scale.

Challenge

The Business Challenge

The primary challenge was the absence of a centralized digital platform. The Department of Heath initiative's reliance on fragmented systems and manual coordination resulted in significant operational obstacles. The key challenges were:

  • Process Inefficiencies: Manual booking, record-keeping, and communication created bottlenecks and were not scalable for a large-scale rollout.
  • Security & Access Control: A unified, secure, and simple access method for all university staff was a critical and non-negotiable requirement.
  • Lack of Reliability: The initiative demanded an "always-on" platform with minimal need for manual intervention or downtime to maintain user trust.

Solution

The Solution:
An Enterprise-Grade Serverless Platform

Pacewisdom architected and deployed a fully managed cloud-native health platform on AWS, engineered around serverless and microservices principles. This strategic approach ensures the system is not only highly scalable and resilient but also operationally efficient and cost-effective.

The solution automates the entire user journey, from appointment booking to notifications and records management. It provides a simple, modern interface for users and a powerful, observable backend for administrators.

Technology used

Technical Highlights & Implementation

Our technical strategy was focused on creating a secure, resilient, and highly automated system using best-in-class AWS services.

Impact

AWS Serverless Architecture

The application’s core logic operates on AWS Lambda, while the containerized front-end is managed by AWS ECS Fargate. This serverless model eliminates server management for NTU, drastically reducing operational overhead and enabling automatic scaling.

Secure Identity & Access Management

To deliver a seamless user experience, we integrated AWS Cognito with NTU's Azure AD via SAML. This provides staff with secure single sign-on (SSO) using their existing university credentials, a vital feature for any enterprise application.

High-Availability Data Management

Structured data is managed in Amazon RDS, providing a fully managed relational database with automated backups and patching. All documents and static assets are stored in Amazon S3 for secure, durable, and scalable object storage.
